Mardi Gras is an incredibly fun time of year, no matter what your taste buds love! At Box Hill Pizzeria, we a partial to our delicious crab cakes. However, there are many other fun Mardi Gras foods you can cook up to celebrate the indulgent holiday.
Louisiana Crab Cakes
Did you know that Louisiana has its own version of crab cakes? While we love Maryland crab cakes, we have to admit that the Louisiana version is pretty delectable too! Louisiana crab cakes use delicious blue crab harvested from bayous and bodies of water around the state. The finished cakes are floured, coated in egg wash, and then covered in a layer of breadcrumbs. This makes a delicious crunchy exterior like Maryland crab cakes.
Shrimp & Chicken Etouffee
Etouffee is a soup similar to a gumbo. It starts with a rich and delicious roux as the base. The roux gets its roots from French cooking, where flour is toasted in a pan until it is deep brown but not burnt. The butter, flour, broth, and spices will combine to make a delicious soup base. Adding in shrimp and chicken is the perfect way to spotlight delicious local seafood and bulk up the dish.
Pancakes
Believe it or not, many people grow up calling Mardi Gras Pancake Tuesday! Pancakes are an indulgent and fun way to celebrate the holiday, and you can get very creative with different food colorings and toppers. Try adding a couple drops of purple food coloring to some pancakes and green to others. Once your pancakes are cooked, stack them with glaze instead of traditional syrup for a fun twist remiscent of king cake. As if that wasn’t enough sugar (hey, we’re celebrating after all!), add some colored sprinkles on top for a finishing touch the king of Mardi Gras would be proud of.
