The summer months are the prime season for crabs in Maryland, so be sure to stop by Box Hill or order our world-famous crab cakes online at least once this season! Continue reading to learn a few facts about the Maryland blue crab season.
Preparing Crab Cakes
The prime season for crabs in Maryland is from May to September. The blue crab is a favorite food among locals, and is prepared in many ways- crab cakes, steamed, soft shell crabs, in crab soup, in crab dip, and more! Steamed crabs are often cooked with Old Bay Seasoning, a blend of herbs and spices that Marylanders know very well, specially made for seasoning crabs. Beer compliments Old Bay nicely, so be sure to have a cold drink when enjoying your crabs this season!
Crabbing Licenses
In Maryland, a recreational crabber is permitted to crab without a license from docks, piers, bridges, boats, and shorelines using dip nets and hand lines. A property owner must register to set a maximum of two crab pots on a privately on a pier at their property- but there is no charge.
For those catching crabs in the waters of the Chesapeake Bay using crab traps, net rings, seines, or trotline, a recreational crabbing license is required. If you are in the state of Virginia, a license isn’t required to crab recreationally, as long as you don’t use commercial fishing gear and only take one bushel of hard crabs or two dozen peeler crabs per day.
Annual Crab Festivals In Maryland
The summer months are full of seafood festivals all over Maryland, and there are many annual events to celebrate the beloved blue crab. Here are just a few of the crab festivals taking place this year:
The 6th Annual Chesapeake Crab, Wine and Beer Festival takes place in Baltimore, MD this summer on June 22. With the cost of your ticket (general tickets are $59), you have access to the festival of over 30,000 crabs, lots of beer, live music, family fun activities, and more!
The PADONIA Annual Crab Feast, located in Cockeysville, MD, takes place on July 13 this year. Steamed crabs will be served from 7:30-9:30pm, or while supplies last!
