Whether you call it a sub, hoagie, hero, or grinder, everyone knows about the delicious sandwich! It is traditionally made with a long sandwich bun and filled with meat or seafood, cheese, and sauce. At Box Hill, we have the hot and cold subs you know and love such as a cheesesteak and Italian cold cuts, but we also offer more unique options such as the cheeseburger or fried shrimp sub. Continue reading to learn more about our tasty subs, and be sure to order one on October 9th to celebrate the holiday!
History Of The Sandwich
The Italian sandwich originated in several Italian-American communities in the US, but it’s thought that an Italian immigrant who came to New York in the early 1900s was the first to bring it to the US. The sandwich was very popular in the Northeastern region, then expanded to the entire US, parts of Canada, and is now available all over the world.
Written advertisements found from 1940 indicate that the term “submarine” may have originated in Delaware. As for the term “hoagie,” it was originated in the Philadelphia area and is still used today. “Hero” came about in New York in the 1930s, and is used to describe sandwiches on a long roll with a generally Italian flavor, such as an eggplant or chicken parmigiana. Lastly, “grinder” is a common term in New England- specifically Rhode Island and Connecticut- but it most often refers to a hot sandwich, while cold sandwiches are typically called subs.
Box Hill Submarines
At Box Hill, we have a wide variety of hot and cold subs, as well as gyros, wraps, and sandwiches. We get our sub rolls from Philadelphia and offer so many different types of sandwiches that we’re sure you’ll find one that you love! Try a classic Italian sub with meat and cheese, or a shrimp salad sub to crave your seafood needs. We also offer veggie subs for all our vegetarian customers.
As for hot submarines, the list is even longer. We offer classic Italian cuisine including chicken parm, Italian meatball, and veal parmigiana. If you’re looking for seafood, try the fried codfish or fried shrimp sub. We’re also known for our delicious cheese steak sub, piled high with shredded steak and onions. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, opt for the pizza burger or cheeseburger deluxe sub!
