About a month ago we talked about the best wines to pair with crab cakes. Wine’s great and all, but sometimes you just want a beer with that salty, delicious crab cake. So this week we are talking all about the best styles of beer to drink with your crab cakes, and we’ll offer a regional beer in that style since Maryland crab cakes need to be had with Maryland beers.
Pilsner
Pilsners are lighter beers that offer a high citrus zest bitterness from plenty of hops, making them a perfect combination for crab cakes and all seafoods, especially those cooked in butter. Heavy Seas Brewery’s Pounder Pils is a great example of this style.
Gose
A cloudy yellow color and refreshing crispiness with just a little tartness is the traditional profile of this style of beer. Great for the warmer months when you’re eating your crab cakes out on the deck. Union Craft Brewing from Baltimore makes a great gose by the name of Old Pro.
Hefeweizen
A classic German-style wheat beer, hefeweizens are brewed with a large amount of wheat and a yeast that gives these beers a dry and tart aspect. Just like you would with your crab cakes, add a lemon for some extra citrus.
Saison/Farmhouse Ale
This style of beer is famously complex. Semi-dry, they usually carry fruity aromas and flavors with lots of spice and a little bitterness. Don’t try and start a fight between your crab cakes and your saison. If you’re serving a saison, keep the cakes simple with a light, fresh sauce. While this one’s technically not from Maryland, Dogfish Head Brewery from Delaware has enough Chesapeake Bay cred for us, so pick up their Biere de Provence if you’re looking for a good saison.
American IPA
By now everyone’s familiar with America IPA’s and their notorious bitterness. If you can’t resist dumping spice on your crab cakes grab a good IPA like Heavy Seas’ Loose Cannon to cut through the heat.
