As Maryland natives, we have been gladly devouring crab cakes for as long as we can remember. But how many of us have actually stopped to contemplate the history of one of our Maryland treats, the crab cake? Like all of our favorite foods, the history of crab cakes is long. Read on for an introduction to this tasty Bayside snack.
The History of Crab Cakes
Food historians traditionally trace the origins of the crab cake back to the American colonies, whose early settlers adopted English minced meat cake recipes and modified them to use what they had, which included crab meat! Since that time, crab cakes continued to grow in popularity, appearing in countless cookbooks throughout history.
It was not until 1930 in Crosby Gaige’s New York World’s Fair Cook Book, however, that the term “Crab Cake” appears in print, at which time they referred to the delicacy as a “Baltimore crab cakes.”
