Maryland blue crab population is on the rise thanks to Chesapeake Bay cleanup efforts!
Marylanders love their crab cakes, and Marylanders love their bay (both Chesapeake and Old). At Box Hill, we take pride in using the freshest blue crabs for our crab cakes, and it’s important for the population to be strong for us to have a healthy supply of fresh crabs. With the upswing of the blue crab population, we’re excited for more crabs coming our way, but even more so for the health of our Chesapeake Bay and watershed.
Chesapeake Bay Pollution and Crab Population
As many people know, the Chesapeake Bay isn’t the cleanest, and the pollution has caused the wildlife in the bay to suffer. However, a recent report shows that multi-state Chesapeake Bay cleanup efforts aren’t going for naught. The Chesapeake Bay Program’s annual “Bay Barometer” shows the female blue crab population in the bay to be around 101 million — 50% more than 2014.
Chesapeake Bay Cleanup Efforts
According to a Baltimore Sun article, the leader of the Chesapeake Bay Program points at broad efforts from multiple state governments to clean up the bay, including an EPA ordinance in 2010 to limit nitrogen runoff, and a 2014 agreement between six states and Washington, D.C. to set goals for bay cleanliness measures.
