When you bring up food pairings, there are certain couples that tend to come to mind. Some include peanut butter and jelly, macaroni and cheese, and seafood and tartar sauce. For years, tartar sauce has been the perfect partner for a number of seafood dishes, including our crab cakes! But how much do you know about tartar sauce?
When you hear tartar sauce, you may be off put because of the dental version of tartar. While dental tartar tends to be a hardened substance that attaches to your teeth, tartar sauce is quite enjoyable when paired with seafood items. The sauce was originally a garnish for a French dish that included steak tartare, which is a thin cut of steak. It was created and named in the 1800s and gradually became used as a condiment for other dishes instead of steak tartare.
Tartar sauce is most commonly made with a mayonnaise base and pickled capers and relish. However, other ingredients can be added to the sauce to give it a unique flavor. Some of these ingredients include horseradish, lemon juice, cayenne pepper, Worcestershire sauce, olives, mustard, boiled eggs, and vinegar. Tartar sauce is known to be tangy and sometimes sweet, which makes it the ideal partner for our crab cakes. While our crab cakes are perfectly seasoned for our customers enjoyment, they are only elevated when paired with tartar sauce.
