3 Common Seafood Myths Debunked

Chesapeake Bay

Learn about the truth behind three common seafood myths.

Seafood is the victim of more reputation-damaging myths than any other food, and it’s important that we separate the lies from the truth. Some seafood myths are so prevalent that you may believe they are common knowledge, while in reality, they are completely false. Continue reading to learn about the top seafood myths and the real facts behind the statements!

Seafood Carries High Levels Of Toxins

While there are valid concerns about contaminants found in some seafood, the majority of seafood does not contain harmful levels of toxins. Methylmercury is the most common contaminate in relation to seafood, but there are only a few species of seafood that have high levels, such as king mackerel, swordfish, and tilefish. However, fish consumption has many health benefits, so instead of avoiding fish, the best way to minimize mercury exposure is to consume fish known to have lower methylmercury concentrations. Seafood including crab, cod, haddock, oysters, shrimp, tilapia, and more are considered low in mercury and are a great addition to any diet!

Pregnant Women Should Avoid All Seafood

As mentioned above, not all seafood has high levels of mercury, meaning that pregnant women do not have to avoid all seafood! It is recommended for pregnant women to avoid larger and older fish that could be exposed to mercury, but fish that contain little mercury are a welcome addition to their diet. In fact, it is recommended for pregnant women to eat eight to twelve ounces of a seafood a week.

Seafood Is Difficult To Cook

Fish is more delicate than other meats, but that doesn’t mean it’s difficult to cook at home! It just takes a little more love and care to make sure your fish is cooked to perfection. Since there are many different types of fish, it’s important to note that there is not a “one-size fits all” approach, as some are better pan seared while others can be baked or grilled.
