Mothers Day 2013: Serve Mom Crab Cakes

Tuesday, May 7th, 2013

Mother’s day is coming up this weekend, May 12th  2013. I am sure you’re not the only one flocking to Hallmark, to get that extra special card for that wonderful woman in your life. Most people think that Hallmark invented Mother’s day as a way to increase sales.

Yet, in the United States, Mother’s Day started nearly 150 years ago. When an Appalachian homemaker named Anna Jarvis organized a day to raise awareness of poor health conditions in her community. She believed this cause would be best advocated by mothers. So she decided upon herself to call that day “Mother’s Work Day.”

Anna began to lobby prominent businessmen and  politicians  to support her campaign to create a special day to honor mothers. In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing  Mother’s Day as a national holiday.

Ever since then, Mother’s Day has has become the most popular day of the year for sons and daughters to express appreciation  for their mother. Cards, candy and telephone calls tend to be ubiquitous that day too. Though they are great ways to appreciate mom, a better way to stand out is to give her some of the best crab cakes in all of Maryland.

The Health Benefits Of Crabcakes

Monday, July 16th, 2012

Did you know eating seafood could help you maintain a healthy diet? It’s true. Studies have shown seafood is very rich in nutrients and low in calories. One seafood meal that is particularly healthy is crab meat. It is low in fat and calories. In other words, it’s very healthy for your heart while remaining a fulfilling and satisfying main course.

Another health benefit of crabmeat is it’s high protein, no carbs make up. One serving of crab is twenty grams of protein making it a great source of high protein for athletes and diabetics alike. While you’re getting the protein you need, you will also be receiving the rich vitamins and minerals your body needs to function and maintain a healthy nervous system. Vitamin B-12 and the minerals of zinc and cooper are all beneficial to your nervous system.

Crab is also high in omega 3 fatty acids that help moderate your blood pressure while reducing your risk of heart disease. Omega 3 fatty acids also reduce inflammation, enhance the function of your immune system and lower your risk of certain types of cancer.

Last but not least crab meat is beneficially healthy because it is low in mercury. For example, Mid-Atlantic blue crab is very low in mercury and considered one of the safest types of seafood to eat based on its mercury level.

Enjoy the wonderful health benefits of crabcakes by ordering  your crabcakes online today from Box Hill Crabcakes.

The History of Crab Cakes :: Box Hill Crabcakes, Maryland’s Best Crab Cakes

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

As Maryland natives, we have been gladly devouring crab cakes for as long as we can remember. But how many of us have actually stopped to contemplate the history of one of our Maryland treats, the crab cake?

The History of Crab Cakes

Food historians traditionally trace the origins of the crab cake back to the American colonies, whose early settlers adopted English minced meat cake recipes and modified them to use what they had, which included crab meat! Since that time, crab cakes continued to grow in popularity, appearing in countless cookbooks throughout history.

It was not until 1930 in Crosby Gaige’s New York World’s Fair Cook Book, however, that the term “Crab Cake” appears in print, at which time they referred to the delicacy as a “Baltimore crab cakes.”

Crab Cakes Today

Crab cake recipes have changed little since their inception in colonial times (although everyone has their own special twist to the traditional crab cake recipe, like Box Hill’s secret family recipe). What has changed, is the availability of crab cakes today. Did you know that you can now order your crabcakes online?
