As Maryland natives, we have been gladly devouring crab cakes for as long as we can remember. But how many of us have actually stopped to contemplate the history of one of our Maryland treats, the crab cake?

 

The History of Crab Cakes

 

Food historians traditionally trace the origins of the crab cake back to the American colonies, whose early settlers adopted English minced meat cake recipes and modified them to use what they had, which included crab meat! Since that time, crab cakes continued to grow in popularity, appearing in countless cookbooks throughout history.

 

It was not until 1930 in Crosby Gaige’s New York World’s Fair Cook Book, however, that the term “Crab Cake” appears in print, at which time they referred to the delicacy as a “Baltimore crab cakes.”

 

Crab Cakes Today

 

Crab cake recipes have changed little since their inception in colonial times (although everyone has their own special twist to the traditional crab cake recipe, like Box Hill’s secret family recipe). Valentine’s Day: History, Romance, and Crab Cakes!

Saint Valentine’s Day, more commonly referred to as just Valentine’s Day, was first established by Pope Gelasius I in 496 AD. The day commemorates the Catholic martyr Saint Valentine, who secretly performed marriages in Ancient Rome. This act was in direct defiance of the Roman emperor Claudius II, who outlawed marriage after deciding that single men made better soldiers.

 

When Valentine’s actions were discovered, the emperor ordered that Valentine be immediately put to death.

 

Today, the romantic February 14th holiday is a worldwide commemoration of love and affection, celebrated in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, France, and Australia.
