She believed this cause would be best advocated by mothers. So she decided upon herself to call that day “Mother’s Work Day.”
Anna began to lobby prominent businessmen and politicians to support her campaign to create a special day to honor mothers. In 1914, Woodrow Wilson signed a bill recognizing Mother’s Day as a national holiday.
Ever since then, Mother’s Day has has become the most popular day of the year for sons and daughters to express appreciation for their mother. Cards, candy and telephone calls tend to be ubiquitous that day too.
